What is a Civil Celebrant?
A Civil Celebrant is an independent self employed professional person offering Ceremonies for significant life events - Marriage, Funeral, Anniversary, Birthday, Commitment, Baby Naming, Vow Renewal, House Warming, Pet Funeral.
Civil Marriage and Funeral Celebrants are appointed by the Australian Federal Government.
They must adhere to a Code of Practice and other requirements as outlined in the Marriage Act 1961 as amended.
They do not receive any government funding.
Each year they must complete the required Ongoing Professional Development. The Celebrant must pay for this themselves.
Many Celebrants belong to a Celebrant Organisation.

Marriage Requirements
On your first visit to your Celebrant, you will complete and sign the Notice of Intended Marriage (Form 13). This must be done one calendar month from the proposed date of the wedding and the ceremony must be performed within 18 months.
Your Celebrant will have this form.
Please bring the following documents with you -
Original Birth Certificates (or Certified Copy)
Photo ID (usually a drivers licence)
Passport (if not born in Australia)
Proof of divorce or previous spouse's death (if previously married)
You must be over 18 years of age (It is possible to get consent or dispensation from the court to marry under the age of 18, but for only one person)
Overseas Residents getting married in Australia
The Notice of Intended Marriage form can be sent to you, but it must be completed in the presence of an Australian Consular Officer, Australian Diplomatic Officer or a Notary Public.
The Document must be sent to your Celebrant along with copies of your birth certificates, passports and divorce/death documents, at least one calendar month before your ceremony.
